...one of the Marshalls told me that had Reynolds not run when the bank wanted to check his assets, he could have declared bankruptcy, paid what he had left back to them and gotten off free. It was the bank, after all, that believed his statements...any original charge would have been minor in comparison to what he let himself in for...not only that but when he ran they froze several millions of dollars...money he COULD have used to pay the people he owed money to...and on top of THAT, his story about getting a five million dollar contract from a Bostom chain of boutique high end supermarkets was true...he actually signed a contract with them to deliver his supposed natural range beef...he COULD have done it...goddamn the man HAD 17 million from the banks to do EXACTLY what he lied about...he had the to money to set up such a business...and he HAD some big customers already...so he got the loans on faulty collateral...so what? he COULD have made it work...same as the horse riding business we started in San Miguel...it COULD have worked...it got off to a good start...but this all misses the point...he and Celina lived for the CON...to them, any business was nothing more than the trap by which they could rip off more money...they had no interest in earning money honestly...neither was it enough to just HAVE money...the money they had was to be WORKED..and its "job" was to lure others and then others...sort of a pyramid scam gone wild in which the money you have, no matter how much, is merely what you use to get more and MORE..but not through any legitimate work...the Con was the thing he lived for and now he IS one.
