...you should have been there the last night...stars above...nice fire in the pit...all of us seated around eating fried brown rice with wild garlic and onion we stumbled upon...pan fried lake trout AND crab from the sea down below our mountain...our last night...so many thoughts...and then I explain what I plan to do next...how I've seen the futility of trying and re-trying to fit square pegs into round holes...and just maybe it's okay to stay the shape you are...if you can find another way to live...said I wanted to get some of the old sea salts I'd met around those parts to help a group of kids repair and outfit one of the many ocean going sailboats dotting many an old wharf and graveyard...and just sail up down the California-Mexico coast...living as we might...minimum of State aid...maybe stop at any one of a thousand islands and build permanent shelters...log cabins and shacks...do some formal learning...but just work on character building..that very basic thing none of them got when they should have and without which you can pour money at them and beat them all you want and you'll BOTH lose...and the parole officer is leaning back against a log, a dreamy far away look in his eye...and then he shoots the whole thing to hell by saying it could never work...because if there WAS such an option...long before delinquent kids filled the spaces he and several other grown people he knew would quit their jobs and opt for the sea...and he was right...in a puritanical society, any sort of rehabilitation or even "treatment" will always have to be nine-tenths punishment, agony and misery...we keep the normal people pliant and putting up with their lot, because they know damn well what awaits them if they don't toe the line just right...and NO program will EVER be instituted that offers troubled youth anywhere a better life than what the "good" kids are stuck with...

,,,and the next day we left.
