...San Jose State University in San Jose, California has honored two former student athletes who called attention to Black American's status in America by raising black-gloved, clenched fists during the medal awards ceremoney and kept them raised high during the national anthem...this was at the Mexico City Olympics in 1968....I remember the incident well because a sculpture of a forearm with clenched fist was the first sculpture I ever tried...I was that inspired by their guts and humanity.

Like Jim Thorpe, the American native who was stripped of all medals for being better than the rest...Carlos and Smith were denied their medals, their records erased and were told to leave the Olympics...they came to America and paid for their pride...so it's good to know that, at the instigation of one current student, wheels were set in motion which have resulted in a bronze monument to them being errected, paid for in part by the student body...and, it should be said, a white Norwegian athlete, who protested in solidarity with them during the same ceremony was also present at the unveiling...I'm going to go down to that god-forsaken campus and take a look...it was there also that I was nearly thrown out of the Sociology department by some hysterical profs...hardly worth commemorating but I enjoyed it at the time.
