The modern Assyrian "identity" is based on a false premise...well actually on several. But let`s backtrack a little...the first converts to Christianity were Jews...when they converted, they stopped being Jews. Ask them. No Jew would think to claim he was MORE of a Jew for becomming a Christian.

However that`s just what Assyrians claim when they find themselves converted, before birth, to Christians....they say, "we are the ONLY real Assyrians anywhere". And tgheir reason is: that they are Christian.

The other premise is that Muslims cannot be real Assyrians...they can`t be real because...well, I don`t really know why not. If you can convert to Christianity and be even more of an Assyrian...how come converting to Islam makes it impossible to be Assyrian? Christians will tell you its because Muslims don`t "take a lot about being Assyrian." It might be rather that Christians have come to define their own Christian rituals and beliefs as "Assyrian"...and therefore for any Muslim , or person of any other faith, to become "Assyrian" would mean, in effect, that the person would have to become Christian. You see the difficulty there.

If indeed any Assyrians survived and there`s no reason to think they didn`t...then it`s just as likely that several of them turned to Islam as well as Christianity. There`s no reason to suppose that all Assyrians would have converted to Christianity and only to Christianity...after all not even all Jews converted and Christianity is basically a Jewish sect...one the Jews were far closer to than were any Assyrians ever were.

But then why the animosity between Assyrians of two different religions? Can these really be brothers and sisters born from the same culture if they`ve been tearing at each of centuries? To answer that you only have to think of the Europeans murdering each other over the SAME religion...as for instance most recently the Irish...who share everything EXCEPT the same Christian beliefs...look at what they`ve done to each other...the children they`ve murdered...surely one can then understand how adherents to different religions could overlook brotherly ties in favor of buthering each other for a god?

Why is it so odd that Assyrians, down through the ages...divided among traditionally hostile religions, have behaved towards each other with such savagery? Don`t people who are similar in most ways, find themselves more angry at a brother rather than a stranger? We can forgive and even tolerate the one who knows nothing of us and our religion...but we can`t forgive as easily the one who dares disagree over some commonly held belief...such as that Christ, or Muhammad, must be supreme...these sorts of differences have caused people to engage in the most barbarous ways towards one another...even within the same family...so why not the same ethnicity, or country?

Christian Assyrians will never convince anyone besides themselves that they are the only real surviving Assyrians...never. It defies the most simple logic and besides smacks of bigotry and mendacity too.

Plus which, what the Assyrians who converted to Islam built, that is the Great Islamic Empire, centered in Baghdad, had all the earmarks of what the world recognizes as "Assyrian". Whereas what the Christian converts managed to do comes nowhere close to what Assyrians were known for.

BetNahrain had been conquered many times by desert tribes....these invaders, such as Sargon and Hammurabi and their people were in their turn conquered by the advanced cultures they overran...they brought new religions, gods, beliefs but most of all a vigorous new bloodline that revivified and strengthened the long-established cutlures becomming lazy and smug in their comforts...it was ever the history of that region...indeed of the entire globe. The Arab armies were no different....they came...they conquered and settled in...they learned, they brought their youth and eagerness and combined with what they found, they spread that culture far and wide and built yet another great civilization which, in its turn, decayed and collapsed.

This constant rant about all "Assyrians have suffered"...meaning Christians...and claiming that only Christians can be REAL Assyrians is such a transparent ploy to gain sympathy and even pity, in order to be GIVEN a "safe-haven"...which will be anything but safe...will go nowhere productive. It`s only outcome will be more of what we`ve seen this last century and now at the beginning of this one too...Christians making these claims will find themselves forced to flee for their lives, for they are advocating nothing less than sedition..which is illegal everywhere in the world....they will settle in Christian countries where some of them will continue to harrangue the world about the injustices they suffered...they will tell this story to a world drowning already in such stories and in which the very people they appeal to, being the most powerful, will themselves be engaged in committing these very crimes against equally innocent people. The end result will be an even more hostile atmosphere for those Christians left behind or who choose to stay...so that in the end they too will be forced to leave resulting in an increased decline of their population...which is supposedly what alarmed them into "telling the wurld" in the first place..in other words, the very end they say they wish to avoid is exactly the ending they are dilligently, though ignorantly, working towards...this is already evident.

The only sanity here...if the insanity of religion can ever be put aside...is that the people of that region converted to two or more non-indigenous religions and that factions on each side continued to engage in the same religious warfare, even among brothers and sisters, as has bloodied this planet for thousands of years. One faction of Assyrians says it had it worse than the other...although currently it`s clear Muslim Assyrians are suffering in far greater numbers than their Christian brethren...who`ve managed yet again to bring down the wrath of their neighbors on their heads.

The best solution will be for Christian Assyrians to leave that region...move to the Christian west and continue their harrangues when there are no Christians left in Iraq and elsewhere to pay for it.
