...in a strange case that has local police baffled, a man calling himself only "GS" called Los Angeles police yesterday saying he`d scared himself. Fearing the worst, officers showed up at Grair`s Tires and Bible Shoppe to find the doors locked and barricaded from within. A shadowy figure could be seen inside. When officers attempted to make contact the man shouted that he was being threatened by..." himself".

A negotiator was sent for and allowed to enter the tire shop...a few minutes later, wuith a priest in tow, the man, "GS" exited and was immediately placed under restraints.

Later during a medical exam doctors determined that the man in custody had been recently writing about what a brave man he was...what he had done to people everywhere...and had become so unnerved at the ferrocious image he`d created that he became convinced he was a danger to himself...the tipping point came when he`d become so frightened at something he`d just said about himself that he completely forgot where he was...or, this is unclear, decided it was best he hide out in Ohio...being too fearful to actually get on a bus to Ohio...he sent out false area codes when daring people to call him and "see what they get".

From then on the man had steadily deteriorated as he became increasingly terrified of the picture he`d painted of himself..."I`m SO bad", he told doctors, "that I`m afraid what I might do to MYSELF".

The man was released later in the day to several mebers of his family who showed up in a caravan of 12 minivans claiming he was a cousin of their`s. As no real crime had been committed and the only person to have been frightened by GS was GS himself, officers concluded there was no need to press charges...the examining physician advised GS to go easy on himself in the future and be more modest in his claims...or he might scare himself again.

Doctors said that as soon as GS realized he was not in Ohio after all...he clamed down and it was then they concluded it was safe to let him go.
