History

Rev. Yosip Qelaita's Assyrian school in Mosul operated from 1920-1945; it was a remarkable school that produced the next generation of Assyrian leaders and intellectuals.

...so THAT`S where they came from!

The following information was obtained from Shemasha Yosip Zia (#42), who attended the school from 1920-1923.

The school year began on November 1st and ended on May 30th. The school was co-ed, with boys and girls attending classes (in the photograph there is only one girl shown, #132); Shemasha Zia says there were many many girls in the school, but few made it to the advanced classes.

For the years 1920-1923, the curriculum was as follows:

1920

English and Assyrian, taught by Aprim Qelaita (Yosip's son)
History and Science, Taught by Benyamin Arsanis

1921

English, Assyrian and Arabic, taught by Qasha Oraham of Barwar

1922

English, taught by Qasha Alexandar deBaz
Music, Scouting, taught by Shemasha Youkhana

1923

Assyrian, Assyrian Grammar, Geography, taught by Qasha Qelaita
Music, Scouting, taught by Shemasha Youkhana
English, taught by Qasha Alexandar deBaz

In 1921 a diasagreement between Benyamin Arsanis and Qasha Yosip Qelaita arose, regarding the curriculum. Benyamin Arsanis wanted to stress history and science, particularly Assyrian history, and wanted a more secular cirriculum, while Qasha Qelaita wanted a more religious curriculum. The Mar Shimun sided with Qasha Qelaita and Benyamin Arsanis was forced to leave the school.

..these are precisely the kinds of "schools" that Saddam objected to...they aren`t schools at all, they are centers of indoctrination. No one graduating from them in "history" could have hoped to compete in any real university anywhere...their language skills might have been adequate but their heads would have been cramed with so much pudding about how Christians are the only allowable Assyrians and they are OWED a country of their own and the Iraqi government is a Userper and the rest of it. That`s the reason almost every Christian graduate from these schools had to go on to study engineering, or accounting or medicine...because they`d received nothing but rot by way ofanything else...but that didn`t stop them...when they got their jobs they took up pen and paper and wrote history ANYWAY!
