,,,when you go looking for a truth, you can't know ahead of time what it will be...or if you'll like it...or if it won't upset all your pet notions and all you were taught. That's one great difference between Aprim and I..and between lots of people.

People are told all sorts of things by all sorts of people as they're growing up. They come to believe those things which are pleasing, unless they're neurotic in which case they believe all the unpleasant things.

It suits Aprim's vanity to believe he is a direct descendant of the ancients...it also suits his sense of entitlement to believe, against all fact, that someone somewhere cares and will right all of his perceived wrongs.

I started out with all the usual stories and "facts" about being Assyrian...about Christianity saving us...all of it. Hell, I even spent years and lots of hard work and a lot of my own money making sculpture born of a belief in the things I was told.

But I thought about it all too. I'm as sorry as hell that I've got the word Christian up there at all on the monument of Ashurbanipal, or that I repeated a lot of the things I never examined critically...wish I could change it all but then again it's a good testiment to how far one can go in mistaken beliefs.

Today I don't care where you come from...so long as you are interested in the well being of BetNahrain...and there's no proof to my mind that only Christians care for it...quite the opposite rather..it seems they have a special hatred towards it, if they can't "save" it...for Jesus of course.

I would have a totally different debate with Dr.Kelly Ross today...I'd still tell him NOT to explain my background to me...I would agree with some of his statements about Assyrian identity being a result of 19th century nationalist yearnings...probably set off by European colonization...and I'd definitely take exception to his entire "Christianity SAVED them savage Assyrians" crap.

But not Aprim...Aprim will never grow or evolve...he'll cling to his blind beliefs all the fiercer as he sees them fail him more and more...and he'll continue to blindly look for "proof" that all his prejudices valid and proven FACTS.

He's also a lot less cute.
