Nestorious was bishop of Constantinople...in other words, Rome. He didn`t agree with Mary being called the mother of "God"...thought it was enough to call her the mother of the divine nature in Jesus, or something...this stuff is terribly silly, so bear with me. Anyway, he was ousted from his position...and banished somewhere...and then next to the Libyan desert...the emperor relented a few years later and sent a messenger to call him back, but they found him dying..his followers, from the Libyan desert in Africa, fer chrissakes...moved to the eastern part of Syria...this is in around 400 or 500 AD...damn, I forget the exact date...anyway, what the fuck has this to do with "Assyrians"? Why were they content to be called after a Greek bishop who never even saw Betnahrain?

Same with that other bind-boggler..the Monophysites.they too got their start in Constantinople...my them Romans sure do seem to have had an effect on "Assyrians". This particular bit of silliness also began among Greeks...and the Monophysites too were cast out of Rome and sent to what was apparently the trash bag of heresy...BetNahrain...don`t ask me why. The Monophysites took hold in the other part of Syria and in Iraq...and between them and who knows what other harebrained sects, these people have been killing each other, literally, for centuries..and then they discovered that they could be "Assyrian"...and that set them all off even harder.

What has this to do with being "Assyrian"?

If we`re going to claim such a hoary descent, then we should abide by the definitions of "nation" and "one people" of THOSE days...not the modern era...a time in which there is NO Assyria anyway.

Judaism is miles from Ashur...much farther than it is from Christianity, which is its near relation...Jesus was a Jew..born and died a Jew..so were all his followers, family and friends..and yet I doubt if any Jew today could convert to Christianity, a distance not so far, and claim he was even MORE of a Jew..for having converted away from the "savage and brutal yahwe"..and yet this is exactly what "Assyrians" say..those who are Christian.

All they hold up as Assyrian "culture" is merely their experiences as a Christian minority...that`s all. There is nothing "Assyrian" about them...not a thing.

Ashur Beth Shlimon might as well be Piere Beth Shlimon...or Bob Beth Shlimon for all the Assyrian he is.
