...will make a big difference in where you go.

America tries to cover its crimes in Iraq by saying it's a noble and necessary goal to plant democracies where only kings and tyrants have ruled...that's true except that the United States supports those kings and tyrants so long as they do our bidding...but should a tyrant turn against us, we decide a democracy is needed, probably because it's easier to co-opt a democracy than an unfriendly tyrant.

You can't "grow" a democracy overnight, with guns and bombs or sugar and spice, where only kings and tyrants have been. Perhaps our naivete comes from believing America never owed any debt to Europe...or Mesopotamia. That America and American democracy was born, fully formed, from the forehead of George Washington...that, although, we too had been ruled over by kings and tyrants, one day we magically transfomed ourselves into a full blown democracy which, in the words of Firas, "defended the rights of minorities". Yeah...right.

In truth the British monarchy had been somewhat subdued for at least a couple of centuries before our Revolution...there had been a Parliament in existance for some time. Most importantly, the stranglehold of the Christian church had been broken somewhat...for there can be no democracy wherever religion dominates...at least not Christianity. Had it not been for the Reformation and then the battles of the Encyclopedasts, Voltaire especially, there couldn't have been any democracy. To create a healthy democracy you MUST allow pluralism...respect and even protection for minority views...and no church grants that.

Kings, tyrants AND popes had all to be roughed up a good bit before any sort of democracy, that was not merely a tyranny of the majority, could take hold in America..and even then it was far from a settled fact. Americans love to think they came out of nowhere and owe no debts anywhere...that they made themselves up...that there was some sort of divine material in their make-up sadly lacking in everyone else.

That same foolishness has us believing that if only we kill enough "bad guys"...democracy and enlightment will prevail...except we now admit it could take "some time". It isn't time in the FUTURE that makes the differnece..it's what your PAST time was like.

Even now when we see religion rearing its ugly head more and more in America, we witness a corresponding attack on pluralism, individual freedom and respect for minority views...the rot is coming back into American political life.

Kill god before he kills you.
