...it was a wild hope that Deniz Fuad was killed by Muslims...and, as it turned out, he was killed by one of us, a member of his own family...just as we regularly beat up only on each other.

Someone pried off the bronze plaque from the front of the pedestal of the Ashurbanipal Monument in San Francisco's Civic Center...and I know it was an assyrian nationalist, a hero...a warrior too afriad to spell out "Qurd", let alone actually confront one.

How do I know? because if someone was merely trying to vandalize, he or she could have done so without risking getting caught..it took time to pry the thing loose. And who would want it? I can see banging it up with a hammer or painting graffiti on it or even obliterating the writing....but steal it?

In the final days before we installed the monument back in 88, the newspaper received a threat from an assyrian in Canada saying that he would come down an personally blow the statue up. There was a real fear in assyria that all of a sudden it was going to be a lot tougher to be a "great" assyrian...the bar had been raised and hundreds of easy-to-be heroes and nationalists and warriors all of a sudden had something serious to match...instead of just misspelling words, writing on kittykats or issuing "challenges" that no one receives, like Bet-Shlimon refused to send Dr. Ross.

Some assyrian hero, distraught at the idea that he didn't have the guts to go anywhere to do anything about Nineveh, Oy Nineveh, decided he would "attack" the Ashurbanipal Monument...scoring a decisive victory over all those who are "enemas of the assyrians".

I think it's great....the more we undress in public the sooner this bullshit will die out.
