To understand why the Assyrian Levies are nothing to be proud of…and everything to be ashamed of and how their behavior helped lead to the massacre at Semele and soured the attitude of Iraqis towards the Christians, let’s try to draw as near a parallel as possible.

If we view the situation dispassionately we see Assyrian refugees, chased out of Persia and Turkey and allowed to enter Iraq where the government tried to accommodate them as best as it could under trying circumstances, economic instability, war-time uncertainty, administrative confusion, imposition of a foreign king, ministerial bickering, conflicting land claims etc. Disaffected Assyrian refugees, claiming that Britain had promised them a part of Iraq…(something the Brits actually did with the Jews, offering them someone else’s land in that instance as well)…the Assyrians fell prey, once again, to their hope that the Brits would show gratitude towards them for agreeing to serve as a colonial police force and maybe with some more faithful service under their belts, would make good on the so-called promises made of an Assyrian homeland…something the Iraqi government was under no obligation to respect since those clamoring for it were refugees and not indigenous to Iraq, backed by the British government which had no rights to give away Iraqi land.

Assyrians….refugees and guests of the Iraqi government, agreed to wear British supplied uniforms, carry British weapons and take pay and orders from the British…who were then occupying Iraq, much to the dismay of the Iraqis. They weren’t the only ones, to be sure, but their precarious position in the country, especially as refugees, foreigners and Christians, plus their subsequent behavior, promised an especially harsh reaction against them when the time came and the British abandoned them.

Let’s see now….supposing a group of Africans, fleeing Darfur, were welcomed into America. Suppose they’d been promised the state of Oklahoma as a new homeland by Libya, or claimed they had. Let’s say that Libya had by then become a world power…the only super power there was…and that its forces occupied America. In order to police the pissed off Americans and not use up their own manpower, they enticed the African immigrants/refugees, all Muslims, to wear Libyan uniforms, carry Libyan weapons, take pay from Libya and follow Libya’s orders. These African Levies were then set to policing the Americans…engaged in gun battles where several Americans were killed and ran riot through malls once or twice killing store owners etc. all the while confident that Libya would make good on its promises of an African homeland in Oklahoma.

Then Libya withdrew her forces…leaving behind the African Levies…and their families. No more support…no more ammunition, pay, uniforms….nothing. “thanks a lot and good-bye”.

I wonder how the Americans would view the disbanded African Levies? Hmmmmmmmmm. I wonder. That’s about how the Iraqis and other Muslims feel towards the “brave” Assyrian Levies. They rightfully view them as traitors, selling out a country that welcomed them, taking money from the Occupying force to act as its enforcers, killing several Iraqi citizens in the process. It must rankle them no end to hear us, safely in America and Britain, two Occupying powers of this day, brag about and praise the memory of what is basically treason to what we now claim is our “homeland”. Get real.
