Devil in a Blue Dress

Barbara Tuchman in a series of essays in the 1970s warned that the presidency was becoming too powerful...that too much power was being given to one man to rule too many lives on his own. She said Congress, one of three branches of our government, had already relinquished its duty to check the presidency by voting funds and continuing an illegal war, that time against Vietnam. If it couldn’t be declared openly as a war, then she said we should not be giving in to an executive branch, one man, with the power to send millions of people to their deaths...that wasn’t what the Founders envisioned. If the people didn’t strongly object to what Nixon had done, there would only remain the judiciary to be corrupted...and that’s happened now during Bush’s tenure...or at least we’ve come mighty close.

The framers of the Constitution gave us about the best weapons and means to protect our Laws peacefully. If we can’t muster up even enough energy to use those means, then we too will eventually elect an out and out dictator. No other countries today, except just such dictatorships, give so much unchecked power to one man, as we do...and look at the quality of man we just gave it to...for eight years.

We want teachers as dumb and ignorant as we are...if that’s “democracy” then it’s the worst sort of government. The Germans went down that road with Hitler.

If Congress can in all seriousness vote to impeach Clinton for his “crimes”...then how to explain that they stand idly by while Bush committed his far more serious ones? Except to say that the other two branches of government seem to be giving way to the executive...and that’s the biggest crime.
