Dr. Edward Odisho speaking to a group of Assyrians in Chicago in June.
On June 2nd and 9th a small group of Assyrian men and women attended an academic workshop in Chicago, a first of its kind, to learn critical thinking and research methodology, lead by non other than linguist scholar Dr. Edward Y. Odisho.

...a noble quest and certainly something long overdue...however, Dr Odishoo himself is no expert in the field...what distinguishes the even widely-read amateur is a lack of academic discipline for THAT subject. Dr Odishoo is a medical doctor and therefore a qualified professional in THAT field. He is a self-taught "linguist", a self-proclaimed "scholar"...one who has defined "critical thinking" and "research methodology" for himself, by his own power as a medical doctor.

..It would be very like my teaching myself medicine...I doubt Dr Odishoo would recognize my "status" or accept any prescription at my hands. In short, he is one more professional in a field OTHER than the one he "teaches" and has "knowledge" in...this is the common error of all our professionals...while recognizing that THEIR field required intense and specialized study under the supervision and guidance of experts in their field...they come to the Humanities sadly lacking that same level of expectation and dedication...because they all, unfailingly, believe that the Humanities don't need to be taken as seriously as gastroendochronology...or even plastic surgery...it's just something you can "pick up" on your own...in your living room...and grant yourself "scholar" status when you think you're ready.

This is decidedly what Dr Joseph did NOT do and couldn't do and wouldn't want to do.

The workshop’s primary intention was “the promotion of a culture of scholarship, academic inquisition and research. This particular culture is most needed at a time when our people, especially in Iraq, are striving for the preservation of their national identity, political rights and human rights as the indigenous people of Iraq and the builders of its ancient civilization,” said Dr. Odisho.

..it is indeed "most needed"..all the more reason NOT to get it from an amateur. Let Dr Odishoo stick to teaching medicine.

“Unfortunately, added Dr. Odisho, this is an area where Assyrians are scholarly and academically most deficient, in the academic fields of Humanities and Social Sciences (e.g. Art, Music, Language, History, Economics, Politics, Philosophy, Linguistics, among others).”

..the key word is "academic"...which MEANS something quite different than what Dr Odishoo thinks it means...you can't dub yourself a "scholar"...not even if you read a lot of books. It's like printing your "book" and calling it "publishing"...real books must be VETTED..they must be subject to peer review...publishers send manuscripts off to experts, usually other writers in that field, for comment...Dr Odishoo has designated himself...has given HIMSELF the title of "academic" and "scholar"...something he knows better than to do in Gynocology...or any field of medicine.

...Dr Odishoo himself, without realizing it, is leveling the usual insult at the Humanities by implying that all one needs to do is read a lot and "write articles"..for pop magazines like Zinda..or, god help us, The Journal of those Academic Assyrians which is neither a journal NOR academic...just words they pick up which sound good.

Known for his caliber and exquisite style, Dr. Edward Y. Odisho, by far, is the most influential scholar in modern Assyrianism.

..that's hardly anything to brag about. It's like saying you're the foremost expert on the Shroud of Turin. Right from the start Dr Odishoo shows that he's no scholar at all...certainly no academician..just one more Christian who liked what he heard growing up and has spent a lifetime polishing up and hugging those original errors that got us all here. His actual beliefs and work are all contrary to the very essence of what he claims to be doing...this is not scholarship, it certainly isn't research...it's just partizanship dressed up with fancy words.

He is the publisher of seven books and countless publications on linguistic and cognitive approach studies, the sound system, and teaching techniques, and has appeared on numerous television interviews. His research has been published internationally - Australia, Italy, Germany, Finland, United Kingdom, and Jordan, in addition to United States, to name a few. In short, Dr. Odisho has the equivalence, in not more, of a political, social and economical system.

....give us evidence of these claims...tell who the publishers are...we've seen enough of self-printed "books. I've been "interviewed" on TV also..so has Tammy Faye-Baker. Teaching techniques, sound systems and all the rest of his areas of so-called expertise have nothing to do with the modern assyrian identity, unless it is to show how to use these things to perpetuate this basic error.

The workshop was sponsored by the Assyrian National Council of Illinois, after learning that a group of post college and university graduates were interested in learning how to think outside the box, and pursue the application of post-education mentality, translating iwar youlpana in Assyrian, a phrase often used by Dr. Odisho.

...then they should have sought recognized experts in those fields....you can't teach yourself academics...just as you can't teach yourself medicine...not if you want to stay out of jail. Unfortunately no one claps these kinds of impostors or self-proclaimed scholars behind bars...even though they do great harm in their own way.

The students reported that they had gained a new incentive and a sense of mental balance, as if a mental light switch had been turned on, gaining access to creative thinking. “We are simply proud, stated Enwiya Giwargis, to be under the directorship of Dr. Odisho.” Another student, Nahrain Talia-Khoshaba said, “I am simply gratified to be in a genius’ presence.”

...a very bad sentiment for a "creative thinker"...we modern assyrians are very, very easily impressed.

We hope that students who are embarking on furthering their education to consider attending such workshops. Please check the Assyrian National Council of Illinois website for future postings www.anciassyrian.com.

...bring them on. I have no doubt Dr Odishoo is brightr than the usual dim bulbs we try to see by...in that sense I'm sure time spent in his company wasn't a loss...but it hardly prepares anyone to deal at the higher levels of the Humanities...maybe they can be paramedics after such a course...but not surgeons.
