He states it quite distinctly at the beginning of this poor, innocent first chapter and although he places it there, it can be applied to the entire book.

“The use of these terms, Nestorian, Chaldeans, Syrians, Arameans and Assyrians, in reference to the same Christian minority, depending on the user’s preferred term, has continued to cause confusion. We will briefly survey the history of these various appellations, with emphasis on the most recent of them:Assyrian. Because of the nationalism that has flown from the adoption of that historic name, we shall conclude this chapter with a commentary on the relationship that the “modern Assyrians” claim exists between them and the ancients by that name.”

Where’s the threat? Where’s the justification hurled at the man, in capital letters, that he must PROVE what he only plans to survey, beyond a shadow of a doubt…”? Prove what? He says right out front what he is trying to do…”briefly survey the history of…” these names. This is an “agenda” to be cursed at and shouted down? The man is a HISTORIAN..historians regularly “survey” things…it is their JOB..it is what they are taught through discipline to do…it is Maggie and the rest of them who feel they MUST prove TRUTHS…a serious historian knows there are none…it is Don who “believes” something and offers as evidence, that he BELIEVES IT!…Dr Joseph says he wants to survey BELIEFS…with no pretense at certainty or vested interest in the outcome…except to stimulate in the mind of the reader similar intellectual curiosity, let it take him or her where it will.

It Is Maggie who MUST…it is Fred Aprim who WILL…it is these people, so damn insecure that they cannot allow a person, not even a highly respected Historian and someone knowledgeable, not in the folk-history or pop-sociology of his OWN beliefs…but in the factual history, as best as it is known or thought to be, of the subject of his profession…a standing recognized, respected and now to be honored by students, peers, publishers and administrators of a well known university.

And for this he must hear himself vilified and cursed and spoken of with disparagement by people who admit, up front, that they are rank amateurs who have not even bothered to read his book? One of whom then goes mad with rage and begins to chew the furniture here and tear her own clothes off and dare and damn and spit and swear that she KNOWS she’s an Assyrian…and we aren’t going to gag and feel oh so sorry for us?
