After years of watching and reading these religio-nationalists I’ve come to what I regard as inescapable conclusions.

The most glaring is that they don’t believe themselves. I say this because they are quick to run from any challenge to what they claim are their heartfelt, indestructible and well-proven beliefs. One expects more fight and vigor from people who present themselves as the heroes and champions of Assyria.

While they’re quick to give advice on what to do...how to confront the Kurds “Arabs” on their home turf...what to demand and what to endure, they are awfully wary of even talking with anyone who disagrees with them in the safety of various Western democracies. Where do they get off demanding that weary and fearful Assyrians FIGHT in war-torn Baghdad and Mosul while they are afraid to DEBATE in San Francisco or London or Chicago?

Is the way they behave in the West the way they would behave on returning to any sort of Assyria? Surrounded by hostile Muslim countries who’ve just been ravaged in an illegal war brought to them by Christian nations would Aprim and Jassim and the rest of them stand up to their Muslim neighbors? Would they engage in cross-border debates and confrontations when they can’t bear even to discuss openly on a forum with their OWN people?

Clearly this is all a game they play to make themselves feel important. And I understand because I can see how impotent and incapable they are and how that must gall them when they present themselves to the world as the lineal descendants of the great Assyrians of ancient days. The question on everyone’s mind is, “well, what happened to YOU?” Their answer is, of course, “Muslims”...Muslims and Islam and Turks and Kurds is what “happened” to them, but mostly Islam itself. At least that’s their line...that’s their explanation. But, like everything else about them, it comes across hollow.

If they don’t know their own history, the rest of world does. Historians know that Islam saved the various Christian sects it came across....saved them from persecution and execution by the heresy-hunting Byzantines and Romans who ruled those lands until the Arabs liberated them. Historians know that Christianity, not Islam, killed people for their religion and forcibly converted people as well. We know that under Islam the local Christians were protected and allowed to grow their sects, sending missionaries to far corners of the world....we know that wherever Islam conquered Christians and Jews were allowed to dwell in peace and practice their religions unmolested except for a tax...and taxes were something everyone paid and still do. We know that wherever Christians conquered they killed every Jewish and Muslim man, woman and child. These are not matters of opinion or open to debate...they happened, they were real.

It isn’t Islam or Arabs which foiled Jassim and Aprim and they rest of them...their real ruination came from greedy Christian nations who flattered and used and seduced such imbeciles as their ancestors...setting them up for retaliation. That and the fact that nationalists find it more satisfying to blame someone for their own shortcomings rather than take responsibility themselves. It isn’t Islam but HATRED of Islam that defeats them...and that hatred is based on the fact that the majority of Assyrians and others converted to Islam and did so willingly....and went on to create yet another great empire in that region; the great Islamic Empire centered in BetNahrain.

Hollow people with hollow dreams and hollow hopes. The only tangible, substantial thing they’ve achieved is make life even harder for those Christians who remain in BetNahrain. That is all “Assyrian nationalists” have ever done.
