...how much assyrian crap is in my head....I´ve been writing, every day, for over 12 years....it makes sorting things out critical so it doesn´t all run together...but here´s a thought...if indeed the assyrians "always remembered"...then how come no one thought to translate the history and culture of 1000 years into the new language of Aramaic? Why did it stay in cuneiform Akkadain, a language they abandoned, and along with it, any memory of what was written in THAT language?

How come Nestorians spent so much time and energy translating and preserving Aristotle and the rest but not their "own" assyrian history? Why did they study all about Moses and not know that Sargon II was the basis for that story? How come they didn´t "remember" that Napisishtim, from the Epic of Gilgamesh, came well before Noah, whom they knew all about from their Hebrew Bible? For that matter how is it possible that they forgot all about Gilgamesh, whose story is so well known and appreciated in the West? Why did it take an Englishmen of the 19th century to decipher their language for them? All those centuries they were up to their assholes in Hebrew literature, how come they cared nothing and knew nothing of actual Assyrian history...besides what little of it was in their bible?

Doesn´t look to me like they appreciated any of "their" history...or knew much about it or cared either...the very fact that it took Europeans to "teach" them "their" language and with it "their" history is a pretty good metaphor for where they got the notion that they are assyrians...they got it, like everything else about being assyrians, from Europeans.
