.....Ultimately....no.

If religion remained strictly private and did not spill over into politics and legislation and prohibitions which wind up affecting everyone else...then maybe. But hardly any religion is satisfied with minding its own business.

You don’t need a commandment from someone’s god to tell you “thou shalt not kill”. Social order, family and civic life would be impossible if murder was condoned or went unpunished...the same for theft, false witness and even adultery, at one time.

Certainly in the last 100 years there are enough police and prosecutors and jails to handle crimes and criminals. Any society can create a very decent system of criminal laws by using the Golden Rule as a guide and nothing else.

Take any citizen and ask him or her how she would like to be treated by others and you’ll get an excellent standard of legal justice.

Do you want to be murdered?

No.

Well then you shouldn’t murder others. It takes no religion and priesthood to establish this.

Do you hate homosexuals?

Yes.

Do you think they should be punished?

Yes.

What if your child was homosexual?

I don’t care, punish him or her because I hate homosexuality.

Very well, what if YOU were homosexual...would you want yourself punished?

No.

End of religion.
