...what is it the boys are trying to say when they call people, usually serious professionals, "so-called"? I assume they mean that the person, inspite of whatever recognized achievements, merits and honors earned as a professional, is not really entitled to his or her titles. Did he get his credentials through tricks and lies? This is what Maggie said she knew Dr. Eden Naby was guilty of....but she never backed up such a serious and under-handed accusation....just said it and left it there. Which tells a lot more about Maggie than Dr. Naby.

...There is clearly envy and jealousy involved here...the villager overawed by what he finds in the big city, so he disparages it as a way of making himself feel better. Our Assyrian "intellectuals" take great pride in NOT having attained any degrees whatever, certainly no advanced degrees in History...and never in their own history...I mean as a serious discipline and not as pop-culture. Either they`re afraid to sound off among people who can easily put them in their place, such as they`d find in any college, or they`re lazy...in fact one of the things we suffer from is the ease with which people simply appoint themselves "experts"...like they appoint themselves leaders of "Assyria". Having once gotten the taste of how easy it is to simply call yourself a "historian" or "intellectual" or "leader" or "politician"...especially as the only ones who will take you seriously are those even dumber than you...why would any of these fools enroll in college and actually study anything?

Can they mean that people like Dr Joseph, whom they disagree with...people who got their ideas from other sources than the village priest or a Syriac manuscript, or the Shroud of Turin...must be "wrongly" called "Dr."...or "Historian"? Is this what it takes to qualify as one of these: that Aprim agrees with YOU?

What is "so-called" about Dr Joseph? His views are his views...boldly stated....what part of them are "so-called" views? His diploma is real...well earned from a prestigious source...how then can it be a "so-called" diploma? On top of that he was a professor emeritus...an additional honor...what about this is "so-called"? Add to that his published, not printed, books...what part of them is "so-called"? And, finally, the recent building named in his honor...an International Studies building on the campus of Franklin and Marshall College....is that institution to be now a "so-called" college because it honored Dr Joseph? Is Princeton also a "so-called" university because it awarded him a doctorate in Middle Eastern History?

The only thing "so-called" around here are the Assyrians...so called...by Europeans and then themselves.
