...The Kentucky clerk who refused to hand out marriage licenses to Gay couples and went to jail for 5 days as a result has been compared, by the Right, to Martin Luther King, no less, because she acted "on conscience" as King did when he broke laws....I know, that's the way they are.

...I notice the Right didn't compare her to one of their own heroes, someone, who was acting on his conscience, even to defying the law...such as Cliveden Bundy, the wacky rancher who refused to pay his taxes because he too had a problem with his "conscience" and obeying the Law....instead they sneaked over to our side and tried to commandeer Dr King to their cause...always remembering that these same people were the ones jailing King, and not singing his praises for being true to his conscience, at the time.

...but we Lefties do have to examine the issue....is everyone right to claim a conscience as the ultimate arbiter of ones actions...is the clerk on the same moral and ethical level as Dr King...is someone who denies civil and human rights to an abused minority, such as Gays, thereby breaking the Law to be compared to someone who wants to spread those rights to an abused minority, African-Americans, even when it too means breaking the Law?

...aren't they both breaking laws because of what their conscience tells them they must? Can't both of them claim that conscience trumps Law?

It isn't the Law alone which is being flouted by Dr King AND Kim Davis...one of them is denying and witholding basic human rights, things like fairness and equality and justice for a minority, while the other is advocating for a minority which has been denied those things.....if your conscience, whether a Dr. King or a Davis, puts you on the side of denying equal treatment to Americans, then you are in the wrong no matter what the Law says...and if the Law supports you in denying equal rights and justice to all Americans, then the Law is wrong and must be flouted, by any means.

...if your conscience tells you to deny equal rights and justice to Americans, even if the Law backs you up, you are in the wrong... because justice and equal rights say so and are the ultimate basis on which we rest our Laws...and when justice and equal rights and humanity and decency are all in line WITH the Law...then fuck your conscience and the God you rode in on.

Kim Davis has freedom of religion...it is promised by our Constitution...no one has barged into her home or Church to tell her she must violate her conscience...she can believe and behave in any way she wants where her religion is concerned...but she can't break the law for her religion, that's final and has been. The Law USED to be in accord with her conscience, like when Slavery was legal and it was illegal for women to attempt to vote...but Laws have changed and society has changed...still, no one is forcing Davis to go against her religion...our Constitution does not allow people to use their conscience to deny Americans equal rights "UNDER THE LAW". Try telling the cops that your religion says you can marry more than one person at a time....see how far your claims of religious convictions gets you.

The only ghastly, yet legal, thing still allowed on the claim of religious conscience is mutilating boy babies (circumcision)....in Africa they mutilate both boys and girls, we only mutilate boys, aren't we "exceptional"...and this hideous and barbaric and Stone Age procedure is allowed on religious grounds....it is the shame of any nation which hasn't outlawed it, but that's another fight.

When your conscience tells you, and your particular God mandates, that you deny, not only basic rights and justice and common humanity, but LEGAL rights as well....you lose and so does your friggin God......what religious people hate and what they will never accept is that while we give them all the rights to believe in whatever religion they want, we will NOT give them the right to force the rest of us to live as THEIR God commands THEM to live. Your conscience is dead set against Gays marrying?....fine, then DON'T MARRY A GAY PERSON....but leave the rest of us alone to marry as we wish.

It isn't the State which has to change its laws to accommodate Davis and her God..it is her God who has to find some way, with all that omniscience and wisdom and miracle-working, to accommodate himself and Davis to US.

If a God can't be accommodating I don't see how we mere mortals can be expected to be....He's "perfect", let HIM do the right thing....the rest of us are "flawed" so we can't be expected to meet with His approval...especially when we don't want it...and most sane people would run, screaming, from His company.
