In April 2003 Mr Andy Lowings formed a group to remake an authentic, but playable version of the famous Gold Lyre of Ur shown above, damaged in Baghdad during the conflict.

inspiration for this came from stone carvings on view in the Chicago Oriental museum that show the earliest stringed instruments ever, dating from the time of Genesis itself !

This had never been done before, authentically, using the correct original adhesives, Sumerian region wood and correct gold quality and thickness. The skills needed for re-making this harp exist in the world today. We asked the very best craftsmen to assist, by donating their work. It is an important part of this project that the authenticity must reflect the antiquity of this famous harp.

The bull-headed Lyre held in the museum of Baghdad, has been well featured in the world's press, as a result of events in Iraq. Much interest has been shown in hearing a remade and playable instrument.

For three years, much work and effort was expended to realise the dream of recreating an authentic copy of the Gold Lyre of Ur.

Work has now been completed and the 'Golden Lyre of Ur' can now be seen in its full glory as shown in this photograph.

If you feel you have skills that would contribute
to the aims of the project then why not get in touch with us.
We should like to hear from you.
Please contact us info@lyre-of-ur.com

Sponsorship to help us promote the Lyre of Ur is welcomed.

We would like to play it for you
and tell its story all over the world.

This is a not-for-profit project that involves anyone
and it is non-political in its aims.
