After the Russian air raids on Islamists in Syria, the chairman of the US Senate's Military Committee, John McCain, wants to equip Islamists with anti-aircraft weapons to shoot down the Russian planes, reports Fox News.

In recent days, the Russian Air Force has attacked a large number of targets in Syria. According to Russia it has attacked terror groups, and the United States believes that one of the attacked groups is funded by the CIA.

Which group it concerns has not been revealed, but now John McCain, chairman of the US Senate Military Committee, wants the Russian planes to be shot down.

In an interview with Fox News, McCain, who himself, as reported by ABC News reporter Alexander Marquardt, has had dealings with the jihadists in Syria, was asked how he thinks that the Russian planes should be handled.

- I would do as we did in Afghanistan many years ago and give the guys the opportunity to shoot down those planes, said the Senator, and clarifies that "the guys" are the US-backed rebel groups in Syria.

Russia on the other hand insists that it has only attacked terrorist groups.

- We have attacked targets from IS and other targets. We attack all Islamic terrorist groups, not just IS, says the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and also mentions the al-Nusra Front as a target for the attacks.

As late as last week, a company of US-trained rebels, "Division 30" joined the al-Nusra Front, which is a branch of al-Qaeda - a terrorist network which is considered to have been founded by the CIA during the Afghan war in the 1980s.
