.....be reproduced only in Arabic not only prevented theological disputes created by translation errors and inadequacies but provided a great common bond for all the peoples who came to follow him. His exhortation that the book was to be read by all the faithful was a strong force for literacy, a stand exactly oppostie to that taken by the Roman Catholic Church, which ordered that the Holy Bible was NOT (emphasis in the original) to be read by any except those with specific authority to do so. Muhammad said that a man must read God's word and gain direct understanding. The Roman Christian Church said that a layman, with his limited knowledge, must not try to understand God's word and must let the Church interpret its meaning. Muhammad said there is nothing and no one between the worshipper and God. No intercessor was necessary and none permitted, not even the Prophet himself. The Roman Church said there was no contact with God EXCEPT (emphasis in the original) through its intercessor, the pope, the PONTIFEX MAXIMUS (emphasis in the original), who held the keys to the kingdom of Heaven." pp. 56-57

...never really thought about this....escept for the feeling that the Church NEEDED people to remain ignorant...and made sure that they stayed that way, and then pointed to their "ignorance" as "proof" that they could not be trusted or allowed to try to gain understanding on their own.

...If Christians were forbidden, on pain of death, to read their own Holy Book, which at the time was about the only book there was and, later, were severely restricted by Church censorship, on anything else they could read, is it any wonder that so many did, indeed, remain ignorant and barely able to comprehend how the Church was bamboozling them?

Also, the point about the Arabic language being made compulsory for Muslims...wouldn't Assyrians LOVE to have been able to make THEIR language compulsory for Chaldeans, Syriacs, Arameans and all of THEIR Christians? The Bible came in Aramaic, Greek, Latin, German, English, French, Italian, Serbian, Russian, Croatian, Transylvanian etc and etc. The Quran came in Arabic...only!
