I was watching a classic old black and white film just now titled "I Was a Nazi Spy"...not much of a story except it was exceptional for its day, 1939, because it was one of the very few films daring to be critical of Hitler and the Nazis...it takes place in America and shows how strong the German American Bund was...that is those German Americans sympathetic to Hitler and Nazism...it's a little over the top by today's standards but then the film makers were trying to overcome American lack of interest in the threat posed by world-wide Fascism....one scene struck me as most relevant...it takes place during a meeting with fanatical American Germans being lectured about how they can go about undermining American Democracy and the speaker actually comes out and says that the way to defeat America, without fielding huge armies, is to undo the BILL OF RIGHTS!!!

That was in 1939, 70 years ago!

So, what's changed? These same right wing Christian Fascists are still after the Bill of Rights, the ONE thing above all else which distinguishes America from just being another tyranny of the majority...and the one thing which truly protects...not full-body scans, not metal detectors and not a finger up our arse, but a guarantee of civil liberties, especially for minorities and particularly for hated minorities. Take that away and this is just a dictatorship by the majority.

There is nothing special in majority rule because without protection for minorities you can never have a real democracy, just a dismal tyranny that will eventually lead to rebellion and revolution...or at the least repressive laws and camps and class warfare.

We know now, without waiting for the judgment of history that the greatest threat to any country is not those whom the majority is told to hate, but those who deal in fear and super-patriotism....THEY will turn out to be the greatest enemy in the long run.
