I had a friend who came into money and I was the only person he trusted (I think) because I never gave a shit about his money and would constantly tell him that those with whom he surrounded himself, were only after the free powder and pills... I had to finally depart from that scene... His state of loneliness, paranoia and emptiness were becoming contagious. He finally got caught, went broke and now there isn't a knock on the door, or a ring on the phone -- only sometimes... and by me. The sad thing is that each time I've called since he left the joint, the first thing he said is "I can't do anything for you, now... I'm on probation". I was only calling to see how he was doing. My New Yorker cousin taught me a lesson long ago, he said if you're broke, act rich; if you're rich, act broke: that's when you know who your friends are.
