...when I graduated high school in 65 it was possible to work at a gas station pumping gas for minimum wage and still rent a decent apartment...and when in the late 60s and early 70s I hitched and hopped freights to Seattle, I met other students like me who could afford to travel around to the various campuses and participate in all the student movements at many points in the country....part of the reason we are being so squeezed now is to keep us so distracted by just having to eat and keep a roof over our heads that no one has the time or energy to get involved in serious political movements...except for the inane and stupid vote every few years.....people are grumpier, more drugged-up and less hopeful or even spirited than I remember...except for the entertainment industry which is supposed to do all of our living for us, with us tuning in to share in their successes, after a long long day at work for peanuts,,,maybe they can afford $50.00 an hour but they can't afford people with time on their hands to think, to plan, to get together in the evening and discuss...or do much of anything...and now young people are worrying about their retirement at 20 and 21.....maybe that's really why people are being worked to death, just to keep them busy.
