Something that needs to also be taken into consideration is that the Christian militias killed Turkish civilians as well and by the thousands. The Turks did massacre some Christians but there is no evidence of a sponsored attempt to wipe out all Christians. The young Turks, who abolished the millet system, still accepted the minorities and did not take jizya from them as they were not an Islamic government but a Turkish nationalistic group. People were massacred on all sides and it was the Christians who had lived in peace for centuries that chose to fight the Ottomans and this is what what caused the massacres. Again, it is a tragedy when innocents get killed but what about the innocent Turks, Kurds and Azeris that were killed by Christians. My grandfather was a soldier during the years of wars and remembered how he would kill Turkish women in cold blood. We have to be fair here and not allow our prejudices or family tradition blind us from being honest.

Churches remained open elsewhere in Turkey, and if they were doing a genocide, how could that be? Jews went into hiding everywhere while Christians did not have to go into hiding. Furthermore, in 1923, after negotiations went well, many of the Christians were even allowed to return to Turkey. Unlike Jews who had a history of persecution at hands of the Europeans, things were very peaceful in the Ottoman empire and I can quote from numerous historians(none of them Muslims) who confirm my statement. A massacre took place, people were killed and died on all sides but there is no evidence of a genocide. Ever since that time, the numbers of supposed victims have risen. Last I checked, according to Aprim and the rest, 800,000 Assyrians were victims of that "genocide". I have read Aprim's "book" and even I, who is not a professional in this field, could easily refute and point out the many lies and historical errors. For example, Aprim claims that in in 1915 the "moslem Turks" committed a "holy jihad in the name of Allah against all Christians in its empire" and that is a flat out lie because the words "holy jihad" were never used by the Ottomans during this time and definitely not by the young Turks.

These are his own opinions and he heard this recent jihad business on cnn so decided to use it in his "book". Any amateur with decent knowledge can refute such lies. The Ottoman empire lasted at least 800 years and there was no history of persecuting minorities. In fact, the Turkish khilafas were praised even by Christian writers outside the empire because it was in those lands were people of different faiths lived together in peace while Christians elsewhere were living like peasants and fearful for their lives because of other Christians. Even the Arab Khilafas treated the minorities well as they were given high positions and protected from Byzantium. At one time the Khalif offered the jizya money back to the Jews and Christians because he was afraid he would not be able to protect them during the wars with Byzantium yet they refused to accept it back and gave their blessings to the Muslims. The war ended up with victory for Muslims and the religious minorities came out playing music and dancing in front of the Muslim soldiers.

One definitely has to be fair and look at all evidence. It is admitted now that the telegram was fake and there is no evidence for a genocide but that people were killed and massacred is not denied even by Turks. People were massacred on all sides and, however, most of the deaths were due to starvation, diseases, famine and cold winters.

Hope this also helps.
