Actually I believe the Assyrians would have survived as Ashurists under Islam regardless of them worshipping idols and statues or not. The Bhuddists survived under Islam in Tibet and other areas, they were even given dhimmi status so were the Hindus and Zorastarians. So I don't see why it would be a problem for the ancient Assyrians to the same. After all, the Quran acknowledges the rights for people to choose freely what to worship and the only thing a Muslim can do is present the message of Islam with honesty and from there it's between the individual and God. The Quran also clearly states that God could have made all mankind just one community and make them all believers but He chose instead to give humans the choice and the ability to think, research, and choose. And I must say the Muslims did an over all good job handling their large empire which consisted of many different people and they were able to survive and prosper together. The Jews reached their golden age under Islam in Spain and many non-Muslims attained high positions in power and were given the rights to worship, education, etc and they were exempt from military service,

Many of these bigots and nationalists are ignorant of the Dhimmi status. They like to complain about it rather than understanding its purpose. It is devised to protect and gurantee the rights of Bnon-Muslims who fall under Islamic rule. The famous soldier and leader Khalid bin Waleed(sword of Allah) told the Byzantiums when he captured Syria that they had 3 days to go as far away as possible or accept life as Dhimmis under Islam. The "convert or die" was never used. So I am wondering if it weren't used anywhere else how come we hear that from our nationalists who try to convince everyone that the majority of the Nestorians and others were forcefully converted by the sword? They refused to convert at the point of death yet were willing to freely convert in order to avoid Jizya txes. Does that make any sense. The truth is that they were not forcefully converted but the majority converted early on for various reasons.

As one western historian put it, "if the Christian world understood Islam and Moslems the way the learned and average Moslem knows Christianity, the many crusades could have been avoided". Christians rely on their priests, ministers and church leaders for knowledge and everything else. This is why we see so much ignorance among Christians when it comes to Islam. I see how Mccain is trying to scare the living hell out of Christians and Americans by presenting Islam as evil and dangerous.
