My late father was a real tough guy, so I've falsely have the impression (as he also did) that all Assyrians are tough. My pops grew up in an impoverished, Muslim neighborhood where you had to fight to survive. So, he and other Christians (Assyrians and Armenians) joined the boxing team at Alborz School. But unlike most Assyrians who didn't associate with anyone who wasn't Assyrian (not even Chaldeans), my father joined the gangs and ranks of different groups: Azeris, Persians, Russsians, Armenians.

My dad was not a thug. He was quite brilliant, an avid reader and thinker, who's influence is why both myself and my brother became interested in art, literature, cinema, poetry, politics. As far as I can remember, he never lost a fight or a debate. His philosophy was to be the best at everything: chess, fighting, debating, how to ride a motorbike, how to swim against the tide, how to use a gun, how to use your brain like a high-power rifle. He was really into the ancient Greeks, more so than the ancient Assyrians. And he couldn't stand Assyrian priests, he thought them to be charlatans and perverts. Whenever my grandmother invited the priest to our home to prey for pay, my father made sure my young, Persian mother was in the bedroom with the door locked until the priest collected his beer money and went on his way.

I remember my father in his black shalwar Qurdi challenging a group of bearded Islamists because they were about to beat up a couple since the young girl was not wearing hijab. I also remember him knocking out some 6 foot white boy in San Jose at a Chevron station on Stevens Creek Blvd. (next to Lyons) when the guy yelled "go back to your country"... He dropped the guy with a left-hook, then slapped his girlfriend when she hit him in his head with a broom stick, knocking down like a pile of shit next to her unconscious boyfriend. (I don't condone hitting women, but I do condone slapping racists.)

He used to tell me how tough and brave Iraqi Assyrians are...

I guess he hadn't the experience you guys had with these so-called tough guys.
