What we are used to calling "Assyrian" is merely Christian/Nestorian or Jacobite or Catholic....we have no way of knowing just what is "Assyrian"....so we call Christmas an "Assyrian" event...or Easter. These are Christian, not "Assyrian"....the actual Assyrians knew nothing of Jesus and would not have been impressed if they had. The language we speak is not Akkadian, which was the language of the Assyrians, but Aramaic, which although spoken eventually by the Assyrians was not an Assyrian language..nothing about us is "Assyrian" except our claim...we are Christians of the MidEast who started calling ourselves Assyrians....before the Euros dug up our artifacts in the 19th century we knew nothing of Assyrians except what everyone else knew from the Hebrew bible....so, the harm is that we are dressing ourselves in borrowed clothing, pretending to be something we are not..and worst of all, make claims to land we say is ours....which is seditiopn and in time of war, treason...and we have paid heavily for this error....today there are fewer Christians in Iraq than ever before...and that is OUR doing...not the fault of Islam for Islam defended us and protected us and allowed us to worship Jesus in any hundred ways we chose...the only people who truly have persecuted Christians is other Christians....not Muslims.

>i agree with you saying the name Assyrian means people of the ancient assyrian empire from the bible. This word has first been used by intellectuals and research men in the middle of the nineteen century one of then is mister JM FIEY

..."probably" isn't good enough. You have to remember that based on this claim to being the legal and only descendents of the ancient Assyrian, these modern ones are demanding that oil-rich land be given to them in Iraq because they are "the indigenous people" of Iraq whose lands were 'stolen" by "Arabs". If you want to stick a feather in your hair and claim to be an American Indian, you are free to do so...you can also tell your friends all about your "Indian Heritage"...however, when it comes to collecting money from the Federal Government, money set aside for actual Native Americans, that feather in your head won't do...neither will your claims to being the grandson of Sitting Bull...for real things, you have to have REAL documents. I have no peoblem with anyone claiming to be related to the ancient Assyrians....who cares? But, I have a real problem with these people making such claims where it can hurt...and it has hurt...it has hurt a lot....it is what gave some "hope" that the Brits, and other, would do what was "right"...meaning "return ancient lands to their REAL owners"....this claim, which is called sedition, is punishable in all countries on earth..and several silly assyrians have been sent to jail and hanged, in Iraq, for not realizing that what they were claiming was illegal...also there has been retaliation against innocent Iraqi Christians, who want no part of this and are content to live peaceably as loyal Iraqi citizens, but who got swept up in the reaction against those who make these claims, who were careful to take themselves out of the country and out of harms way.

i have not enough knowledge to prove that. what i think is that archeologie, customs, and physical details seems to show that the christians from hakkiary could have some roots as far cousins with thoses assyrians.

....so could every Muslim in that region.....the notion that ONLY Christians can be desended from the ancient Assyrians shows that this is nothing more than a Christian sect thinking to fool people into regarding them as a separate ETHNIC group. In truth everyone in that region is descended from everyone else in that region...Muslims accept this and think of themselves a desended from the ancient Sumerians, Babylonians, Hurrians etc., of that region...they make no religious claims to exclusivity, only assyrians do.

The assyrians where not christians of course and they adorated maby differents gods. It was the same for the arabs in old times they were not muslims and they also adorated many gods too they became muslims with mahomet.. But nobody say that the muslims today are not the descendant of the arab civilisation. about the language of course we do not speak akadian the history shows that with times, invasions, people can change or be forced to change their language. as i khow the aramic language has been used time after time because it was more easy to learn than akkadian. in france the language today is french, but in old times people spoke the language from great invasion made by Goths, Visigots, Ostrogoths, who were people from north europe, and after people spoke latin . and now french.

..yes, and any person in France today who insisted that he was not French but an ancient Gaul, and that France wasn't really France at all, but Gaul, that it was USURPED by Germans...and further that his ancestors owned the land where today stands Nortre Dame, and therefore wants it back because HE or SHE is the only "indigenous" person in GAUL whose country was invaded by GERMANS...would find himself in a state hospital for the deluded or criminall;y insane...which is where all assyrians making these claims also belong.

i think that christians in middle east today are calling themselves assyrians to preserve a common root between all their differents parts chaldean, nestorians jacobites syrian and even yesidis and why not kurds. but all that is really difficult to understand and to prove.

...the actual historical record shows different...it shows that our people never called themselves Assyrians until the Europeans called them that....before that and as far back as the 16th century we all started calling ourselves Chaldeans, also because of European missionaries...those who went back to the Catholic Church called themselves Catholic Chaldeans and those who remained Nestorian decided they would be Chaldean Nestorians...both groups liked the name Chaldean...it wasn't until Layard and Botta in the 19th century that the name Assyrian came into use...and it wasn't until 1976 that the Church of the East added "Assyrian" to its name.

These points are all handled in a scholaraly and factual manner in Dr Joseph books...I will post an exceprt with the highlights for your edification...this is a book that all assyrians claim to have read but none have....for obvious reasons because it shows them to be both wrong, ignorant and foolish. I hope you will read it and then comment.

>about your grand father dr baba parhad are you sure he fought alongside with agah petros?. as i remember at that time 1917 baba parhad was in Russia with freidoum atouraya and was creating with him the Assyrian socialist party. but iam not completely sure.

...I have been told he fought...but, he had a brother, also a doctor, who was drowened along with a few hundred others in that ship on lake Urmia...maybe I am mistaken about which brother fought....I do know that after baba took his family to Iraq and when he was approached by members of the community who wanted to join the Levies and once again believe in British promises, he toild them to forget it...that the best they could hope for was to protect their families, to become loyal citizens of Iraq and rebuild the communty's life and fortunes....so, he grew wiser as he grew older.
