I agree, and disagree: In the 1880s, the first wave of Jews arrived to Ellis Island, due manly to several Russian pogroms. Remember, the Tsar was the most blatant enemy of the Jews. In 1902, the second arrivals came. Remember, Russia was (and is) the most anti-Semitic nation Jews in which Jews had lived. They were confined to the Pale of Settlements in which they lived in little towns, or shtetls. They believed that Socialism (not Zionism) was the solution to their second-class citizenship. The Russian Orthodox hated Jews, they had a group called The Black One-Hundreds, who were an extremely fascist outfit who'd take the trains to the Jewish towns, and mingle and drink with non-Jews, uneducated peasants, and so on, and they'd persuade them to run amok attacking poor Jewish families, raping their wives and daughters in front of their sons, fathers and grandfathers, stealing their what little they had, burning them alive, in addition to burning down their homes. There was a Jewish lady at a Tariq Ali talk who brought up the anti-Semitism of Stalin, Brezhnev, and other Communists. Tariq, very gently explained that Stalin was upset with Golda Meir for not joining the Communist block, since he voted for the establishment of "Socialist" state of Israel; then he went on to explain that there certainly was anti-Semitism, but nobody in the West talks of the Black Hundreds, who would have killed, tortured, many Jews, much more than Hitler and the Nazis ever did.

So, the Jews who arrived to the U.S. from 1880s to the 1930s, were not the racist, White workers you and me wish to avoid. These were intellectuals, philosophically-trained men and women, these were the likes of Emma Goldman, Alexander Berkman, and the Americans were no dummies either: Rudolf Rocker, Mother Jones, Eugene Victor Debs. And in Hollywood, we had Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Paul Robeson; in literature and journalism: Ernest Hemingway, Martha Gellhorn. I agree, this was the golden age of labor, the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) or "The Wobblies", and my favorite American, Woody Guthrie, who never took off the sticker on his guitar: THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS!
