the long and the short of it is that organized religion has been steadily losing ground and has become desperate. meaning radical, in its efforts to remain a force in people's lives. The "great" evangelical movement is more evidence of this...it is not, as its bleary-eyed fans describe, proof that people are coming to Jesus in record numbers....but proof that they have been leaving him in record numbers, though many are shy to admit it when asked, and those who remain shout even louder to make it seem there are just as many of them...and those barn-like evangelical temples provide nothing more than the get-rich-quick "promotional talks" we've heard before only this time Jesus is the Huckster, through his pitchmen and women.

One advantage to desperate times is it produces desperate people who are then admonished to pray for better lives...they pray because they see no practical way, through organization and politics, to improve their lot, so they are asked to go down on their knees and beg for what they could seize, if they had the nerve.

It won't last and never has...people will eventually turn to violence to force change...this was what our Constitution tried to prevent....having experienced periodic revolutions in Europe the Constitution gave us a lawful means to make whatever changes we felt would benefit our lives...it's right there, in print...which is why the neo-con Right and religious folk hate that document so...through that document Afro-Americans, women, Gays and everyone else who tried improved their lot without themselves resorting to violence.....

Take the simple expedient of increasing wages....it's so simple, really.....all you need do is gather a few thousand signatures to place the issue on the ballot and people can vote themselves a raise...they don't have to pray, they don't have to strike, they don't even need a union to pay dues to and to fight for them...they just VOTE themselves a raise...as they can vote themselves medical benefits, retirement etc.

This election there is just such an initiative on the ballot in Arizona....it was so so easy...and a side-benefit is that such a measure brings people out to vote and since there are more Dems than Repubs, this issue will also bolster Dem turnout...Repubs used this tactic long ago...that's the reason they placed so many school-prayer and anti-abortion and anti-sharia law measures on ballots; to get Repubs out to vote...Arizona also has a marijuanna-for-fun measure on the ballot so even more Dems will come out......

Religions, all of them, have become more desperate and radical and fundamentalist...at the very least they want to retain their stupider members, the most prone to fanaticism...it isn't a sign of health in religion or the churches but of decay...thank goodness.
