"...most interesting. I've always believed that the US government, especially Hoover and the FBI used and allowed the Mafia to take over labor unions in the 40s and 50s as the means by which they crippled them...when the rank and file and indeed the rest of Labor learned that the Mafia was, among other things, siphoning off union dues to use for building casinos and other such uses, the American people "naturally" turned off to unions, convinced they were bound to be corrupted if they weren't already...this was a smart way of fighting unions..like Death Squads you get thugs to do your dirty work for you.

...especially weird as Hoover denied and denied there was such a thing as a Mafia, or organized crime but instead when looking for Communists of whom he found NOT ONE active member...meanwhile every school kid knew where to find the Mafia hoods...not until the leadership was busted during a clan gathering in upstate New York was Hoover finally forced to admit there was a Mafia....same idea: infiltrate or use proxies to attack and/or defame the opposition."

-- That's true about Hoover and the FBI... and it was also the same thing that U.S. Naval Intelligence and the CIA did to break up the communist labor unions in Marseille and Sicily. In 1940's, Meyer Lansky made a deal with Thomas E. Dewey, who when he was a D.A. busted "Lucky" Luciano, the head of "The Commission" of the Five Families, but during the war threats of German submarines and German spies close to the Eastern Mafia-run docks and ports of New York led Dewey to collaborate with the Mob. So it was decided that "Lucky" would be released from prison but deported to Sicily, from where he organized, along with Sicilian and Corsican Mafiosi, to attack and bust up the communist unions and dockworkers in Marseille and Sicily. As a quid pro quo, the CIA looked the other way while "The French Connection" was moving high grade powder heroin from poppies grown in Turkey, Iran and Southeast Asia which where manufactured into powder in various Corsican labs in Marseille, then shipped to Mob-controlled harbors and ports of Montreal and New York... then dumped into Harlem, which was run by Jewish mobster, Dutch Schultz. I again refer to "The Godfather" in the scene were Don Corleone finally agrees to cooperate with the rest of the Five Families in the drug business during the infamous meeting where one Mob boss gets up and says, "I don't want it near schools! I don't want it sold to children! That's an infamia. In my city, we would keep the traffic in the dark people, the coloreds. They're animals anyway, so let them lose their souls." Prior to the 1940s and '50s dope epidemic, Harlem was experiencing a cultural renaissance ("The Harlem Renaissance") and militant followers of Marcus Garvey were getting politically organized. But within a half-a-decade, Harlem turned into a a hell full of junkies, pimps, dope dealers, whores, gangsters, and killers. One wonders how amazing Jazz musicians and artists like Charley "Bird" Parker, Lester Young, Billie "Lady Day" Holliday, Miles Davis, and many more got trapped in the web of dope addiction. One of the best scholarly books documenting this period is Alfred W. McCoy's, "The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Politics_of_Heroin_in_Southeast_Asia
