"He said liberation theology’s practitioners were systematically martyred over more than 20 years by U.S.-backed forces to prevent Latin American nations from installing socialist governments to benefit their own people, rather than American interests."

...that same war has been going on against American Labor here at home as well as the common people every day. The rich have to maintain control or they fear the people will vote higher taxes on them in order to pay for social programs which help keep the economy thriving, for all.

..this is the true, mature, meaning of Fascism. Hitler's version was the Model "T" of Fascism, the earliest beginning...although it resembles old-world monarchies and tyrannies it is significantly different because it has to thrive, somehow, in the age of democracy and the vote...now that the people are enfranchised they can technically vote in every program that would further their own interests...so, how do you stop them...how do you trick them?

This is what modern, grown-up, Fascism is all about; getting supposedly free people to vote against their own best interests and FOR the interests of the filthy rich.

This war was fought, as you say, in Latin America with outright violence, and at home with the threat of violence but much more by using Jesus and "moral issues" to trick people into thinking they were voting for morality when in reality they were voting for the interests of the rich....but the motive is the same.
