As to your comment regarding motive, I think Finkelstein is quite aware of it, but he wants to first iron out the legal issues since there is sound histroical and legal evidence at hand. If he were to get into speculation of Imperial motives-- as much as there's evidence to back that up -- he would really shoot himself in both feet and have no standing in debates about the issue. For the motives of not only the Arab/Israeli Conflict, but that of Iraq, one should go to Noam Chomsky.
