Anyway, to your question "what are these people afraid of?" They are afraid of being challenged, and the last thing they need in the classroom is someone who thinks critically, or takes initiative in his or her education. They are not teaching kids how to think, but how to obey. And if you just happen to be a kid who thinks, then you're labeled as being "insubordinate". In the 7th grade, my teacher was confused and rattled because I was reading John Leo Herlihy's "Midnight Cowboy". She told me that I need to choose another book to read. I did. It was Anthony Burgess' "A Clockwork Orange".
