One year during the crusade period, the caliph offered the jizya money back because he was afraid he mey not be able to protect them, and the minorities did not want the jizya money back. They offered their jizya and blessings to the muslims.

...I'm not sure this is the same incident but Durant mentions a Christian village taken by the Muslim army in their battles against the Byzantines where the village was forced to pay a sort of bounty for the protection they received from the Muslims, under Khalid Ibn Walid, the "Sword of Islam"...the villagers were GLAD to pay because they knew what the heresy-crazed Byzantines would do to them...but Khalid was forced to abandon the town to strengthen another part of the battlefield and so he gave the money back because he could not promise to protect the Christian village from the Christians...later however he managed to come back in time and save the Christians after all...from other Christians...and they paid and were most happy to do so.
