There's an unfortunate amount of racism toward Black people in L.A. from Mexicans and Central Americans, and vice versa. The reason is that Latinos started moving into historically Black neighborhoods like South Central L.A., and taking jobs from Black workers -- the other reason is that some Latinos (like some of our own) want to be White, like Zimmerman's mother. I clearly remember around 2000 or 2001 when Chicano gangs were gunning down Black people on the streets, young and old, gangster or civilian, to whom they refer as "mayate" (mallate), which I think means cockroach, or just simply "nigger". My own neighbors who are from Mexico voted for Hillary in '08 because Obama was Black and if elected the Black community will start getting "uppity". This is just another way of dividing the working class: It happened with Whites and Blacks when Blacks were getting paid less to do the same work as Whites, infuriating the White workers who blamed Black workers for taking their jobs. Then, the same pattern emerged when Mexicans and Central Americans worked for less pay, taking the jobs and benefits that Black workers once enjoyed. It's a sad tragedy. It's not about race... but class.
