That's right, I have read that too. The "assyrians" of Urmia(iran) also started calling themselves that around the same time. I had an urmo admit this himself when he said that they weren't calling themselves assyrians even 100 years ago. He tried to justify it of course by saying that they always knew they were assyrian but didn't call themselves that. He later said they then said to themselves "we aren't just suraye, but we are aturaye" which he acknowledged does not mean assyrians. There were nestorian persians and aramaic was once spoken by the persians, and when the great discovery was made, those from iran jumped on the bandwagon as well. It was the chaldean name which was first used and the nestorians did not call themselves assyrians until after the discovery and this was few centuries later. They were jealous of the catholics who were calling themselves chaldeans and they first used that name too, but then came the assyrian one and aprim settled for that since in his mind the ancient chaldeans weren't so cool.

In reality both communities are full of it, but the chaldeans have never gone to such extremes and never made demands. They were okay with being catholics from iraq, but the nestorians couldn't just be christians from iraq because they don't like muslims. So aprim and every nationalist is a liar when they say that chaldeans of today are assyrians who switched. They were nestorians who switched, not assyrians. Nestorian and assyrian have nothing to do with one another.
