I was having a conversation tonight at work during my break, and this old Christian asks me what religion I am. I told him I don't have one and he asks: are you atheist? And I said: if you say so. He thought he had me trapped and tells me that I'm among a minority because the majority of people in this world are christians and then other religions. He was basically trying to say that most people believe in god or have a religion. I asked him when he chose to be a catholic and what convinced him and all he could say was that he was born into it but he didn't word it that way. I told him those "majority" of people never had a choice but a religion was rather picked for them by family. I told him most people would not have a religion today if it were not for family tradition. And I don't believe one can actually argue against my opinion because there is an estimated billion and half people in this world who do not identify with any religion. I'm sure most people are born into one and figured it was bogus at some point. But the rest of the religious people only follow what was given by birth. Both religion and nationalism are silly to me and both are in the same boat.

If the average nationalist was born in India or Panama, he would not be a proud Assyrian but a proud Indian or Panamanian. It just happens a person is born in Pakistan or Greece and is a Christian, Muslim or Hindu and goes with that. How many saudis would be Muslims if it weren't the religion of their country? I doubt it would be purely Muslim. The same would go for any country and christianity only gained people because of forced conversion, torture(something they slander muslims with), bribe or other scandalous methods. The only reason religion appears so important is because it upheld and enforced by the governments and churches. One can't even run for president in the US if you are not a christian. In other words, a person with a doctor degree must believe in a "big man in the sky" and a place with golden streets and that some character from the past will reappear in the future. Imagine making it through Harvard or Princeton and believing in that.
