"...I don't agree with either of you. The price you have to be willing to pay for your own inaction in the face of injustice is to suffer your just desserts. That is justice, as a principle...not just some abstract noble-sounding discussion point while you, or I, are personally safe. Especially when you consider that any taxes you pay help pay the salaries of the guards at Abu Ghraib.

...my response would be, "I had it coming"....what else could be the truth?"

-- I agree. Unlike some of my friends who are white Americans and think that since they've dropped out of society and live in some commune while receiving government aid like food stamps and General Relief, they have nothing to do with the injustices perpetrated by the U.S. government. Even though I wasn't born here, I am still responsible for all past, present and future actions of the U.S. government, since I enjoy the same advantages as most Americans of my class. If one lives here, makes money here, pays taxes here, buys or uses products and technology gained through years, decades and centuries of bloodshed and exploitation, they bear as much responsibility as the guard at Abu Ghraib.

Yes, when the shit hits the fan "I had it coming", but like Camus, I have no pretensions about my personal safety or the well-being of my loved ones. I'm not here to win awards for being a just human... I'm just a human, and self-preservation precedes justice, unless one wants play the Jesus game and turn the other cheek.

Each one of us lives on stolen land, be it in Mexico or California or where ever else in the U.S. We drive cars that run on oil and gasoline, and when the price of gas goes up, we complain, even though we know that lower gas prices means that some country like Venezuela whose main export is petroleum, will literally end up in economic ruin and social chaos.

I have no doubt in my mind that if someone attacks my family, I wouldn't even have time to think, "I had it coming". I hope that I'd do what ever I possibly could to save my loved ones from pain and suffering.

Like Camus, between justice or my mother, I choose my mother.

That's just the truth. Crucify me for being selfish.
