"The only people I knew who showered daily and often in Germany were my Turkish friends, the Arabs and pretty much anyone from Muslim countries. They used to shake their heads out of disbelief that the "civilized" westerners were so funky and dirty."

- In Tehran the only Christians who rebelled against washing their asses after a visit to the toilet were called "koon-gandy" (crusty asses) by Muslims. But the rest of the Christians (Assyrians/Chaldeans) and Jews like the Muslims used the "aftabeh" (ewer or water pitcher) to wash after wiping, or they had bidets or hoses installed in their bathrooms along with toilet paper, soap, nail brush, and hand towels. We not only showered daily using shampoo, soap, wash clothes, brushes, and lava stones, but we had a habit of using public bath houses weekly. The major culture shock my brother and I experienced in the US was that there were no bidets or hoses in the bathrooms, which meant that each visit to the toilet was accompanied by a shower. I used to leave school (and work) to come home to use the bathroom until I made things easier and started using the aftabeh or a bottle of water which I carried with a bar of soap, toilet paper and paper towels in my bag. I remember my first white friend telling me that AMericans only wipe twice: once up and once down... and that they sometimes wash their hands after using the bathroom. Of course this doesn't apply to all whites and all Westerners... or does it?
