It had been a while since I read that book but I know what you talking about. He goes on to say that Islam holds Jesus in the same regard and he is respected the same as Moses, Muhammad and the rest of the messengers and prophets of god. And I think at the beginning of the book he mentions the beatings he took as a child growing up Jewish in a Catholic area, and says that perhaps Jews could have accepted Jesus as a prophet had it not been for the centuries of persecution. Also about a century ago, there was a conference of Christian clergy and they concluded the reason eastern Christianity almost lost its entire population to Islam was because of its simple doctrine. There are no mysteries, trinity, nature of Jesus debate etc. Just one god, that's it.

Imagine if it were not for those armies and wars between Christians, and you would have perhaps even more Christians following the Arian/Islamic view of Jesus. These things went on for centuries even to the time of Muhammad when Christians were still at it over this subject. There are still smaller numbers of unitarian Christians which the trinitarians do not see eye to eye with. Bart Ehrmann, also has an interesting book called "lost Christianities" and he mentions the various churches with different doctrines that existed in those days and were violently removed. There were some Christian sects who were so different from the modern ones, the resembled Muslims in every way. JMD Kelly also touches on this in his book. He says it was a common "heresy" in the first century after Jesus that he was not crucified. He uses "heresy" but that's his own word since he is not of that kind, but who cares what he thinks. He admits it was common in those days.

Today a Christian will call Muhammad a demon for denying the divinity of Jesus and making him only a prophet and Messiah, but that was the traditional view in those days and there were many Christians(mostly his own Jews who accepted him) who believed him to be a prophet and that promised Messiah who would liberate his people from the hands of Romans and persecution. All one has to do is look at the Jesus movement of Jerusalem, which was headed by james, his relative, and they shared the same views of Arius and Muslims. There were the Ebionites or Nazareans who were Jewish followers of Jesus, and they didn't believe he was god.

I believe the western Christians invented this godly Jesus because it is more convenient for them. The confusion came from them, and then they went on to kill those who didn't share their views. I have seen the reaction from Christians today and they can't stop calling Muhammad names all because Muslims don't accept Jesus as their god. Why can't he just be a prophet who was sent by god and who did good things? Why does he have to be god
