...interview with an historian who's written a book about slavery in the American North. We hear and read nothing except slavery to the south ut the colonies up north were right there. Even worse they sold Native Americans into slavery in the islands where the sugar trade was the most brutal and murderous...they didn't keep them as slaves because they had friends and family who might try to free them and they knew the terrain and could escape and hide...so they were shipped away and Africans brought in their place.

What was most fascinating to learn was the precursor to the American attitude since then in dealing with people who won't cooperate...who want to live by their own laws and culture.

The early colonists didn't come to America to freely practice their religion...they came to impose their religion and make it the only one allowed...and most were Puritans who were hated in Europe and for good reason....their self-righteousness was intolerable and still is.

There is a document from the earliest days which prohibits slavery "except"..and then the paper goes on to make it obvious that slavery was ok...it just SOUNDED like it wasn't. People could be sold into perpetual slavery for committing minor offenses...offenses the Natives knew nothing of before the white man came.

Also in case of war, or debt or reluctance to be "good" and accept what the colonists were convinced was their morally superior way of life and values and religion Natives were sold into slavery.

And this is the key to the American attitude to this day. They believe they are bringing everything that is superior...and if you are too stupid or stubborn to realize this, then they get offended and besides you prove how retched and unworthy you are because you refuse their gifts.

Back then it as their religion and values which they deemed superior and anyone who didn't agree and resisted was obviously bad and not worthy...and had to be saved by FORCE...otherwise they would go on in their sinful and bad ways and be damned to hell, so really you were saving them, for the next life if not for this one.

marvelous cover for rape and theft and murder.

And they're still at it. This is what gives Americans their moral fervor, their pathological need to save people even if means killing them, in this life...we even said it in Vietnam, that we had to destroy a village to save it...and the people in it too.

That's the reason we're so pissed at Iraqis and anyone else who refused the "benefits" we offer, even at the point of a sword or barrel of a gun....it is still BENEFITS we bring, like freedom and democracy and elections and liberty.

If you refuse us then YOU are in the wrong and we become indignant, "what is the MATTER with these people"? WE wail.

WE are what's the matter.
