A Christian rebel in Syria has reportedly beheaded an ISIS militant in revenge of those "executed" by the group in northeastern Syria, AFP reported Friday, quoting a local monitor group.

According to AFP, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the beheading as taking place this Thursday in the Syrian province of Hasakeh – an area largely under ISIS control.

According to the report, a fighter from the Assyrian community stumbled upon the ISIS jihadist in the village of Tal Shamiram and then "took him prisoner."

According to observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman, "the Assyrian fighter (then) beheaded him in revenge for abuses committed by the group in the region."

The fighter was part of a Kurdish offensive attempting to push ISIS out of Assyrian villages in the Hasakeh area.

The Observatory tracks the conflict using a network of sources on all sides of the civil war which spiraled as security forces used violence to suppress protests against President Bashar al-Assad's rule in 2011.

Islamic State has killed members of religious minorities and Sunni Muslims who do not swear allegiance to its self-declared "caliphate". In the past, the group released a video showing its members beheading 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians in Libya.
