...is a paper my daughter submitted for a college class. I felt there were things in it good to know, so I posted it...

...it is a shame that the United States of America was founded on the bodies of hundreds of thousands murdered Native men, women and children who never did a thing to the invading Christians but help them and welcome them...it is also a shame that, needing cheap labor to exploit, these same marrauding Christians stole African men, women and children and dragged them across the ocean to be their slaves...and worse still that they raped the women to produce more chattel they could use and sell for further profit...it`s also tragic that, in order to cleanse these people ethnically and culturally, they denied them the use of their native languages, culture and religions, even to the point of taking their children from them to raise according to their own purposes...a further shame that they encouraged people to come to America from China and Italy and Ireland and then persecuted them and worked them to death and forced them to live in ghettos always in the worst possible conditions, trying in every way to erase their ethnic identities and melt them into one big lump in their melting pot...especially when you consider their heritage included the Renaissance and Age of Reason and Enlightment and such things as The Declaration of Independence and the Declaration of the Rights of Man, with their eloquently expressed notions of personal freedom and individual rights etc.

America set a terrible example and unfortunately Saddam couldn`t help himself but followed that terrible example, engaging in his own brand of ethnic cleansing in the effort to create a homogenous population that would see itself as Iraqi, primarily, with some ethnic flavors here and there...much as the bedeviled Irish were finally turned into "Americans" after decades of persecution and discrmination for being Irish and Catholic too...who now identify themselves as Americans first, but with Irish ancestry.

Someday Iraq will achieve the same...Kurds, Yezidis, Muslims, Christians, Jews, all of them, will see themselves as one nation of Iraqis, with several ethnic, religious and cultural "flavors". America had the leisure to develop...Iraq has been under attack almost from the day it was created out of the Ottoman Empire by the Europeans...the same people who invented modern Assyrians and Chaldeans.

Iraq has a greater struggle before it than America ever had...but the people will make it eventually...as the American people did.

Saddam may have done terrible things in his efforts to create a stable country out of a volitile ethnic, religious and linguistic mixture...but no worse than the leaders of the Free World did in their turn. But, he never sent his armies ten thousand miles away to attack totally innocent people who`d never done a thing to him.
