...every so often a distressed call goes out to the assyrian nayshun for a leader...or a new leader...or a better leader. Last week at Maggie's place such a call was made, yet again...and then there are denunciations of current and past leaders...they were or are traitors, we are told, because they didn't deliver what the nayshun expected. Every hothead assyrian wants a leader to "unite" assyrians and of course get them "what we deserve", meaning their own assyria...and no one has ever done either...either united them or gotten them anywhere near to their own country...the twin goals of unity and country are never questioned....it's just believed that the right leader will get these things for them...but, is it even feasible...is it probable?

No...here's why.

As to unity. assyrians firmly believe that Christianity saved them, kept them together, kept them from dispersing and being "lost". The opposite is true. Christianity has divided them among battling sects, or gangs. Now, it may be true that gang members are united...but usually they are united in opposition...opposition to other gangs or to a larger society. And while Presbyterian gang members may feel very close and chummy to others in their gang, they aren't too friendly to Catholics, who dislike them right back and so on with Protestants, Pentacostals, Baptists, Mormons and all the other Christian gangs....they are united within each gang, but opposed to all others...so, where is unity possible?

If anything Christianity has FORCED people to do battle with each other...to separate from each other. One old-timer told me that in Urmia, after all the missionaries came and divided the community among them, people who had been friends before, who helped tend each others flocks, for instance, would no longer take care of Catholic sheep...or Lutheran sheep, but only of their own.

People say "let's unite as ASSYRIANS", meaning forget our religious gang affiliation...but it hasn't worked and never will because in truth the very designation of "assyrian", in the modern era, IS Christian....ask them...ask them if anyone BUT a Christian can be assyrian...and you'll quickly realize that at its core, being assyrian means being Christian, first and foremost...hence the impossibility of assyrians, or Christians, ever uniting.

When the call goes out for a leader the question has to be, "to lead us where"? What is the job description...what do we expect...where is it we want to be led?

If the task at hand is inherently dangerous you want an experienced leader...if the task is to climb Mt Everest you want an experienced climber to lead the expedition...if he first has to satisfy your notions of what mountain climbing should be...you will have turned a supposedly experienced climber into another amateur, like yourself.....

It also matter what the task is...where you want this leader to lead you. In the case of assyrians they want a leader who will lead them to Nineveh, to their promised land. The question then becomes, can ANYONE lead you there? Is it attainable, assuming you even find a qualified leader?

The answer is "no". There is no chance of getting to an assyria...none. The Jews didn't "get" Israel...it was given to them by the Brits and later maintained by Americans...if some one can be found to "give" us assyria and then maintain it, we might get there...but there doesn't seem to be any chance of that either.

There is precious little any leader can do for us, any chance he can lead us to assyria, on our own...so, the right leader for assyria will be the one who can convince someone else to give it to us...and by the evidence before us, there isn't a single assyrian leader capable of doing more than generating laughter among white folks.

Your goal may be very difficult...say, swimming to Hawaii...for which you declare you need a leader, a coach etc. But can it be done, with ANY leader? Anyone fool enough to apply for that job shows, from the start, that's he's unfit for it, or much of anything else...because it can't be done.

But, let's say you both believe it can be, or should be...so you accept your leader...you do as he tells you...you swim laps in preparation, you grease yourself, you learn to stay awake for 24 hours straight until both your leader and you believe you are ready...your leader, or course, remains behind in Turlock sipping coffee while you, the one led, plunges into the Pacific and starts swimming....fifteen minutes later you're pulled from the water gasping and spluttering and it's over...yet again.

What do you say? Do you give up your ridiculous attempt? Do you chastise yourself for your silly "hope"...or, do you blast your coach, your failed leader, and put out a call for ANOTHER leader? And will you follow HIM next?

assyrians will NOT unite...they can't. A few years ago assyrians split yet again along religious lines and had a huge court battle in San Jose pitting assyrian against assyrian...they spent a few million on legal fees, made fools of themselves and stirred up so much hatred that families were divided...one grandmother I know was refused permission to see her grandchildren because she was on the "wrong" side of this religious battle....it took years for the scars to sort of heal, and guess what...the community is more divided now than it ever was.....assyrians are almost congenitally set against "unity"...by definition, religious definition, they can't unify...not possible.

assyrians will never get a homeland....and there is no "leader" who can lead them to that impossible place...I know, I know, like good Christians who believe and "hope" Christians are energized when you give them something impossible to do, with all the odds against them...they smile and feel they are following the example of Jesus who got up from the dead, after all...so why can't THIS be done?

This is exactly why, outside of church, you won't find any serious leaders in our community...because only a charlatan or opportunist or fool would even apply for the job. Not only do we want to be led to our homeland, but we expect our leader to stand up to Saddam, or the Qurds, and DEMAND he return assyria to us....many fools will apply for the job but not one of them is fool enough to make such demands..there in Iraq. It's easy doing it from Los Angeles...but we want a leader who will go THERE and do it THERE...hence, we remain leaderless...and always will.

Turns out it matters very much WHERE you want to be led, before you can get a competent leader...and no one wants to lead the way to assyria...and for good reason.
