I saw the film when it came out in '69 or '70.....the theatre was full and I'll never forget the crowd and my feelings when we walked out...people were in shock. Now, these were all college students, the kind of people who back then would even bother with a foreign film in subtitles....so one assumes they had all taken American and European history...I'm sure they were shocked that such things could go on in any country, but maybe still confident that it would NEVER happen in America...but still, the shock was palpable...stunned silence...people holding onto each other tighter than when they walked in, including me and my lady faire.

I've seen it recently again and the best thing is that it seems so "of course" now...of COURSE the rat bastards lie...that's their job.
