...Dr Baba Parhad was apparently involved in drafting the Assyrian Manifesto back in the early 20s along with Dr Freydoun Atouraya. He went on to fight with Agha Poutrous and as a result was forced to escape Urmia with his entire family...along with many refugees they were settled in camps by the British in Iraq. Though he'd been forced to leave everything behind, including his medical school diploma, he attended to people in the camps until the Iraqi government gave him a job at a hospital in Mosul...naturally this led to envy, that most assyrian characteristic of them all, so that some of his own people complained to the government that he wasn't really a doctor...this was all some higher officials, resentful of his popularity among Muslims, needed to fire him and deny him the right to practice medicine anywhere in Iraq...a few years later he went, alone, to Geneva, where he got his medical degree all over again...returning, an old man, to Iraq he died soon after.

But during the 1920s, when the British came again with promises of "your own private Assyria", several assyrians came to urge him to lead them..and for advice. he told them to forget it...reminded them they were daily complaining of broken British "promises" and that joining the Levies they would become Britain's colonial police force and as such gain the anger and hatred of the Iraqis, whom the British were once more occupying...they didn't listen and many joined up.

They asked again when that other band of fools crossed over to Syria because they heard of French PROMISES, only to attempt to re-enter Iraq, with their weapons....by then the Iraqis had lost all patience with these ingrates who came running for their lives to Iraq, because they betrayed their neighbors to the British, and now had the gall not only to take British pay and guns to use against Iraqis, but also kept an armed band who thought nothing of crossing borders as they saw fit....something no sovereign nation would tolerate...again he'd cautioned them not to do so foolish a thing and again enough didn't listen that they brought the tragedy of Semele down on innocent ears and heads.

My grandfather knew all about this ditzy claim to an assyrian heritage...hell he helped WRITE the damn document...but he also knew that fighting against the odds for such a will-o-the-wisp had already cost the community dearly and would cost them even more in the near future....his advice had been to settle down in Iraq, like good and faithful citizens and raise their families in peace and towards prosperity...but a sufficient minority, no doubt with dreams of becoming President of Assyria, insisted that "we have our national rights" and went ahead and ruined it for all.

In retaliation against this treasonous behavior by what were guests in Iraq, the government decreed that no assyrian could attend high school or college..and so our people broke rocks for the roads and dug ditches...the highest class of assyrians were truck drivers who owned their own trucks...these were our 'elites".

Only my grandfather's family, sons and daughters, were exempt because of his service and the friends he'd made in high places and so his sons were admitted to higher education and finally four of them to medical school, in Iraq.

It took years for the Iraqis to forget the ungrateful behavior of the few assyrians who still believed the British and worked for them and kissed their backsides too....years before assyrians could join fully in the national life and economy but even then they held out...they insisted on remaining "pure" and pig ignorant to boot...till the memory of British promises finally faded...only, sadly, to be reawakened as American promises and so a whole new generation has been needlessly lost till there are very few left at all, and STILL there are fools enough to cause the last remaining ones to be chased out or worse.

Which is the reason it is so important to debunk these claims...so they never again think there is even the slightest chance, in hell, that anyone will give them anything but a cold shoulder.

You'd think the real mission of those nationalists, from the beginning, had been to reduce the assyrian presence in Iraq...of course they saw it differently, but had they not been stupid enough to hold this "hope" in the first place, they could have seen the disaster they were preparing for the entire community.
