Christians have this idea that they have been persecuted throughout their history and it started as early as Roman occupation of Palestine. I read books by Dr Ehrman and others about early Christianity. i have been researching early Christianity for a long time now because this subject is interesting to me. We are told that the Romans persecuted and hunted down Christians because of their faith but the reality is not simple. The persecuted were not Christians but Jewish followers of Jesus who were also known as "messiahnic Jews" and other labels. Such were seen as a danger to Romans because they opposed them and refused to cooperate. It was these people who were persecuted and crucified but this already started before Jesus. As for those became known as Christians and lived in the Roman world, they were at times harassed and even attacked by angry pagan mobs but the government did not stop them from practicing their faith. They were even viewed with suspicion but most of their conflicts were with citizens.
