Since we have some die hard giants who claim they are true Assyriand and it is they who can some how dictate who qualifies and who doesent, it is fair to get to the bottom of this so called Assyrianism. We already know that prior to about 1915, there were no people actually claiming this title. There were a group of Syriac speaking Christians who all belonged to different denominations. Those who belonged to the Roman Catholic Church were given the name "Chaldeans" in order to distinguish them from the Nestorians. Then, the British as usual needed an ally to fight their battles for them. Since they were educated, knew the region, and knew that no one in particular was using the "Assyrian" identity and it became convenient. They needed a group of uneducated, yet willing, group of people to fight their battles for them and they gave the group that was known as "Nestorians" the name "Assyrians". Now, they had an ally and someone to rely on in the Middle East against the Turks. They gave this name in particular to the Nestorians, not because they were descendants of the ancient Assyrians, but because it was convenient and it was only applied to the Nestorians. The British knew about their Roman rivals and how they had previously named the Chatolic Syriac speaking people as "Chaldeans" and now they named the remaining Nestorians as "Assyrians".

These same people who call themselves Assyrians today didn't know anything about the ancient Assyrians. Even if they were the descendants of the ancient Assyrians, they didn't know shit about them but were carried away with their paganized version of Judaism and forgot their true identity. Since the British invention during 1915, these people all of the sudden became more and more fanatics. It was convenient to call these mountain Christians as "Assyrinans" rather than calling them just "Nestorians" or "Christians". This waw now it seems as if these people are an ethnic community as well as a religious denomination. They were called "Suraye" before, or "Syriacs" and most likely they were Arameans. They were calling themselves "Suraye" and there was no division among them, Catholics or Syrian Orthodox because they were really one people. So, the Arameans, whom the assyrian fanatics deny as the descendants of the ancient Arameans, have every right to be pissed and feel robbed. They know the trick the British played on their Nestorian brothers in order to get them to fight for them.

So, this explains why these fanatics will not allow a non Christian, and in many cases a non Nestorians, to call himself "Assyrian" since the name was given to the "Nestorians". The British knew that these people are not the only descendants of the ancient Assyrians(If they are at all), But they applied the label conveniently. It is interesting that it was the foreigners who had to teach about ancient Mesopotamia while these fanatic Syriac speaking Christians knew nothing about it. The Muslims of Iraq knew very well about their ancient Assyrian/Babylonian ancastors. They knew about the "Ashureen" wa "Babileen" well before the British and always called the ancient Mesoptamians their proud ancastors, but they werent dumb top go grab a label for themselves exclusively.
